There are several different types of adoption available today. The following types, open and closed, are common and either may be the right solution for you.
Birth mothers in open adoptions have contact with their child and the adoptive family. This can look like phone and video calls if you live far away, or even play dates if you are close by. These decisions will be made by you and the adoptive family.
Open adoptions are a way for you to know your child as they’re growing up. This option is becoming more popular as much of the stigma surrounding adoption has subsided, allowing you to be connected to your child even if you don’t have the means to raise him or her.
A closed adoption means that the adoptive family and child won’t know who you are, the birth records will be sealed, and there won’t be any communication between you and the adoptive family or child.
Women who choose this route do so for a variety of reasons. Some feel it would be too painful to have a relationship with the adoptive family and child after relinquishing parental rights. Others simply want to move on after birth. Regardless of your reason, a closed adoption is still a loving choice for your child and their future forever family.
