Pregnancy tests deliver positive results when the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is detected in urine or blood (depending on the type of test you take).
This hormone builds in your body after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus, which takes roughly a week after conception. It takes time for hCG to rise to a detectable level, but you can usually get a positive test at least one day after your missed period.
If your cycles are irregular, try testing about four weeks after the last time you had sex or around 36 days from the start of your last period. This can help reduce the chance of a false-negative result.
Testing first thing in the morning, right after you wake up, increases your chances of the test detecting hCG early in pregnancy. That’s because your urine is more concentrated.
If you take a test later in the day, try not to drink large amounts of liquid beforehand, as it could dilute your urine and affect the accuracy.
Sometimes, even after a missed period, hCG hasn’t risen high enough to trigger a positive result. If your test is negative but your period still hasn’t arrived, wait a few days to a week and test again.
If you continue getting negative results but suspect you may be pregnant, try a lab-quality pregnancy test. If it still comes back negative and you haven’t had your period yet, talk with your doctor about what might be causing your delayed period.
Facing the unknown can feel stressful, but you don’t have to go through it alone. Liberty Women’s Clinic offers free pregnancy testing in a safe, confidential environment. If your test is positive, you may also qualify for a complimentary limited ultrasound.
